The bowel sparing operation strictureplasty was pioneered in Oxford. Instead of cutting out a section of diseased bowel the narrow section is opened out and reclosed, so overcoming the obstruction caused by the narrowing. Access to the small bowel is through a very small umbilical incision. When the bowel has to be removed and there is no other option the extent of resection is being tested with an Oxford trial called “CERT”; Crohns Extent of Resection Trial.
